Overview
What is Phuket Elephant Sanctuary?
Phuket Elephant Sanctuary is an ethical elephant sanctuary in Paklok, Thalang, in the north-east of Phuket. It looks after elephants that have retired from logging and tourism work. The sanctuary covers about 30 acres of natural forest beside Khao Phra Thaeo National Park.
Is Phuket Elephant Sanctuary ethical?
Yes. There is no riding, no bathing, no shows and no chains. You walk with a guide, hear each elephant’s story and watch them forage, socialise and splash about in the forest. From April 2026 the programmes focus on watching the elephants rather than hand-feeding them.
Which sanctuary programme should you choose?
- A Morning With The Elephants starts at around 09:30 and lasts three to four hours.
- An Afternoon With The Elephants starts at around 13:30 and lasts three to four hours.
- The Canopy Walkway Programme is the shorter option, about one and a half hours during the day.
What is included in the morning and afternoon programmes?
Both half-day programmes include the guided sanctuary visit, the canopy walkway, a homemade Thai vegetarian and vegan buffet, and a shared hotel pickup and drop-off within Phuket. The kitchen can work around gluten-free or nut needs if you tell us before your visit.
What is the Canopy Walkway Programme?
The Canopy Walkway Programme lets you watch the elephants from a raised path through the trees. The buffet and the hotel transfer are not part of this programme.
Is it suitable for children and older visitors?
Yes. The sanctuary welcomes families, from young children to grandparents. Golf carts help with the longer distances, there is a nursery at reception, and some sections of the canopy walkway are wheelchair accessible. Wear comfortable shoes.
How far is the sanctuary and what if it rains?
Paklok is about 30 to 35 minutes by road from the northern beaches and the airport, and about an hour from Kata and Karon. The visit goes ahead in any weather. Umbrellas, rain ponchos and rubber boots are provided when needed. The sanctuary is open all year and closes only for Thai New Year on 13 April.
