The Ancient City (Muang Boran) & Erawan Museum
- Samut Prakan (South-East Bangkok), Thailand
- 4-5 Hours
Overview
What is the Ancient City (Muang Boran)?
The Ancient City, also called Muang Boran, is the world’s largest open-air museum. It covers 200 acres in Samut Prakan, south-east of Bangkok. More than 100 full-size and scaled reconstructions of Thailand’s temples, palaces and monuments are arranged on a map shaped like the country, from the Lanna north to the shrines of the south. A visit usually takes four to five hours.
What are the highlights inside the Ancient City?
The gilded Sanphet Prasat Palace and the lakeside floating pavilions are the most photographed spots. There is also a recreated floating market where you can stop for snacks.
How do you get around the Ancient City?
The grounds are large and flat, so most visitors rent a golf cart or a bicycle at the entrance. Rental is paid at the venue, and a passport is held as the deposit for a golf cart. The visit is self-guided, so you can go at your own pace.
What is the Erawan Museum?
The Erawan Museum is close to the Ancient City and is known for its giant three-headed elephant sculpture. You can visit it on its own, which takes one to two hours, or book the combo with the Ancient City for a full day.
